Get your students involved in officiating netball through the Youth Umpire Award. This
course introduces the principals of umpiring and the rules of netball and can be delivered
by a teacher. It is ideal for students who want to get involved in officiating and get
involved at school or officiate at the School Games.
The Youth Umpire Award (YUA) has been designed for young people
from 13 to 18 years of age and consists of a 6 hour workshop led by
a teacher or England Netball tutor. Once the students have had time
to put their new skills into action they can then be assessed by an
England Netball Umpire Assessor in order to achieve the
qualification.
Key Course Objectives
Introduce the principles of umpiring and the rules of netball
Introduce officiating to young people, to enhance their
knowledge and understanding of the role that the official plays
in netball and sport as a whole
Offer opportunities for students to umpire matches within their
school or other appropriate environment
Who Can Deliver the Youth Umpire Award Course
The YUA course can be delivered by:
An England Netball tutor
A teacher with QTS holding significant knowledge of netball and key stage 3 and 4 of the
national curriculum.
Teachers must attend a three hour Orientation Workshop
where they will receive the relevant information and
resources to effectively deliver the fundamental skills of
umpiring through the course. This includes Tutor Guidance
Notes, a rule book and a candidate resource book to help
support teachers deliver the workshop.

Development Officer. To find a workshop in your area,
